Karen tells us that at a recent fundraising dinner, her tablemate continued talking to her after the speaker had begun. "How do I politely listen, yet pay attention and give consideration to the speaker?" she asks.
If a tablemate makes one comment we listen. If they continue to talk, politely give your tablemate eye contact, nod toward the speaker and smile.
This non-verbal hint should be enough of a cue that you wish to listen to the speaker. If that does not work say something like "I can't wait to hear more about that after the presentation."
Then turn toward the speaker. Restart the conversation after the speaker finishes, so your tablemate knows you value them.
