Gift Giving and Japanese Clients

Professional Polish Tip from Deborah Rinner

"I am meeting a Japanese client. I have been told the Japanese are conscious of giving and receiving a business gift. What should I take as a gift?"

Any good quality item from your city or state such as a local photography book will work extremely well.

Gifts are presented after the end of the first meeting. The wrap is as important as the gift. Red paper is a good choice, with no ribbons or bows but exquisitely folded. Gifts are not opened publicly. Present your gift with both hands and accept one in the same manner.

Avoid giving anything to the Japanese that is made in Japan. Also avoid scissors, watches, clocks, or 4 or 9 of anything as those are all considered unlucky.
