Dining in a Private Home in a Different Culture

Professional Polish Tip from Deborah Rinner

Jane asked "What do I need to know if I am asked to dine at someone's home, and I am in a different culture?"

Thank you for asking that important question.

Dining in someone's home is an honor and rules do differ culturally.

In many countries shoes are removed at the door. Be prepared in case this is expected. Always wear socks, as bare feet are not acceptable in most parts of the world.

Also, you've heard the term "Dress for Dinner"? The U.S. term casual does not translate well. Shorts, sleeveless shirts, halters and the like are not acceptable in private homes. And finally regardless of the country, wait until the host or hostess begins eating before you do.
