Andrew works with a colleague whose first language is not English. "Although he communicates in English, I find it difficult to make small talk due to the accent. It is difficult to understand him. What can I do to make it easier?", asks Andrew.
My compliments to Andrew for seeking a solution. Many people avoid conversations that are challenging.
First slow down. Ask for clarification in a patient and interested way, and spend time listening. This will allow your ear to become accustomed to his voice and that may affect your understanding.
Taking time to adjust to a different speaking style is invaluable, and leads to building a relationship that may not otherwise develop.
