Your perception as a person is formed by how others view you. Facilitating a meeting is a key time to influence not only the outcome of the meeting, but your persona! Here are a few tips:
1. Don't think you have to be an expert on the subject being discussed. Even the leader can learn from others.
2. Your ethical behavior is critical. Breaking rules like confidentiality can quickly destroy trust. Be sensitive to ethical guidelines of the business, the group members and your own good judgment.
3. Create a safe, non-threatening environment where all participants feel safe, comfortable and want to learn. Good facilitators establish credibility early and work diligently to maintain credibility throughout and after the meeting. Discourage participants from sniping or "zinging" one another, even in fun.
4. Think of ways to energize the group discussions. Let the group help you figure out ways to deal with group inhibitions.
5. Recognize that while people have different personalities and may or may not actively participate in the discussion, they all want to be recognized and appreciated as unique individuals. All people have a desire to be listened to, taken seriously and respected.
6. Compliment the group by starting discussions on time and finishing on time or early. Consider designating a time-keeper for the meeting if you anticipate time management challenges. Only extend discussion times when the group will strongly benefit from that decision.
