For the next month, become aware of your non-verbal communication patterns and challenge yourself to make appropriate adjustments. Below are some general guidelines when communicating cross-culturally.
Don't cross your legs. In Asian and Northern European countries it suggests premature familiarity. Both feet should be flat on the floor. In Northern European countries leg crossing is also considered a sign of bad breeding. In Arab and Asian countries, exposing soles of shoes or feet is considered offensive.
Don't use your hands to excess.
Do refrain from nervous gestures such as fingering a ring, a pen or shoe string.
Do be aware of your voice level.
Don't be abrupt, direct, loud or boisterous. These are major faux pas outside the United States.
Don't be overly friendly, as you will seem pushy or insincere.
Do accept hospitality when it is offered. Refusal of tea or coffee may be interpreted as an insult in many countries.
Don't smoke, even if your client is smoking.
Don't ask permission to smoke.
Add your own personal do's and don'ts.
