Question:
People say I often look upset.I'm not upset, I guess I'm not a natural smiler. How do I make sure they do not perceive me incorrectly?
Tero says:
Most of us are unaware of the message our facial expression is communicating to those around us. This is especially true when we find ourselves in a stressful setting such as when we are asked to speak to a group of people or chair a meeting.
A smile humanizes you and your message. A smile relaxes you and others.
What if the message you are delivering is a serious one? It will be difficult to emphasize serious points if you maintain a serious facial expression throughout. Consider varying your facial expression to match your message and challenge yourself to smile more often.
