Question:
I work with a colleague whose first language is not English. Although he communicates in English, I find it difficult to make small talk due to the accent. It is difficult to understand him. What can I do to make it easier?
Tero says:
Many people avoid conversations that are challenging.
First slow down. Ask for clarification in a patient and interested way, and spend time listening. This will allow your ear to become accustomed to his voice and that may affect your understanding.
